Sammy Brue was just 13 years old when he first graced the stage at the Wildwood MusicFest & Campout, the annual summertime music gathering in Sheridan, OR, USA.

That was five years ago.

Returning to the festival last summer with a few more road miles and most of his teenage years behind him, Sammy showed up at Wildwood ’19 with a full band a handful of great new songs that he had just recorded in Britain.

Our podcast team seized an opportunity to hole up with Sammy in the festival RV to record this solo session. He debuts a few songs from his upcoming record Crash Test Kid, due out June 12 on New West Records, and also talks about recording the new record, making connections in Europe and the scene of young listeners and concert goers he’s reaching out to in his songs.

Like a lot of our favorite artists, Sammy’s been sidelined by the restrictions revolving around the current global health pandemic. But stay on the look out for Sammy as the record is released and he makes his way around the world as one of the hottest young songwriters in folk and rock.

Anybody who has seen Tennessee singer-songwriter Matt Woods perform solo knows that all he needs is an acoustic guitar and his big, powerful voice to rock any house he’s in.

But last year, while out promoting his latest album, he toured the U.S. and Europe with a kickass four-piece band that cranked up the awesomeness to another level. Such was the case at last summer’s Wildwood MusicFest & Campout in Sheridan, OR, USA, where our podcast crew enjoyed a “full band” set of Matt Woods music for the first time, then retreated to the podcast RV for an interview and intimate performance by the man himself.

A longtime favorite and friend of the podcast and multiple time performer at Wildwood, Mr. Woods shares some tales from the road as well as a few of his greatest hits. The whiskey and laughs flow freely during this interview, so kick back and enjoy as podcast hosts Eric Kotila and Mike Lee get caught up with Matt while debriefing after the stunning Wildwood set with his band, The Natural Disasters.

There are a lot of great memories to unpack from last summer’s Wildwood MusicFest & Campout, but certainly one of the best was Drunken Prayer’s Friday night headlining set.

Flanked by a cast of talented Portland-based musicians, frontman Morgan Geer whipped the crowd into a frenzy while delivering tunes from the band’s spectacular breakout album of 2019, Cordelia Elsewhere.

The next day, the crew from That Much Further West Podcast welcomed Geer into the festival podcast RV to talk about the performance and get up to date on all things Drunken Prayer. Geer was in the midst of a cross-country road trip, traveling from his home in Asheville, N.C., along with his wife Krista and 6-year-old son Leon, covering thousands of miles and performing dozens of shows over a 75-day stretch.

He also shared a couple of performances on acoustic guitar, including a brand new song called “Nachos For One” (see video above) that he wrote while on the road in Europe opening for The Handsome Family.

Whenever Morgan and co-hosts Eric Kotila and Mike Lee get together, a lot of laughs ensue. So give it a listen and stayed tuned for more sessions from the RV at Wildwood in coming weeks as we try to shake off the winter doldrums and look ahead to warm, sunny days ahead.

If you took every type of authentic American music — blues, jazz, rock, gospel, etc. — and tossed them in a blender, the noise you would make would sound something like Tennessee Stiffs.

Following in the footsteps of Americana favorites like Scott H. Biram and Shovels and Rope, the Austin-based four-piece lean on each other’s vast array of influence to create music that’s as specific to their personalities as it is limitless in potential.

We at That Much Further West Podcast were introduced to the music of Tennessee Stiffs in the run-up to their appearance at last summer’s Wildwood MusicFest & Campout in Sheridan, OR, and after their killer performance on the festival stage we were thrilled when they accepted our invitation to join us in the podcast RV for an interview.

Turns out this fabulous foursome is as fun to hang out with as they are musically gifted. Led by the husband-and-wife team of Ethan Lee Sadler and Cara Jane Sadler, the group crowded in along with a great group of our friends and followers for a fantastic visit led by podcast co-hosts Eric Kotila and Mike Lee.

During the interview, we learn about the formation of the band and also some of the struggles they’ve faced in the subsequent years of album-making and touring, and also the many and varied influences the group calls upon to generate their authentic sound. They also share a few sweet performances that will clue you in on why we’ve come to love this crew.

Daylight Savings Time has slipped away, and as darkness descends earlier each day, we start to dream of the sunshine and some of our favorite things about the summer.

Here at That Much Further West Podcast, summer is our favorite time of year because we gather enforce at our favorite summer festival, the Wildwood MusicFest & Campout in Sheridan, OR. It’s where we discover so much great new music every year, and also where we meet up with old friends, some of which we may see only once a year.

And we definitely count Willy Tea Taylor among those friends. He’s been a guest on our show many times over the years and always brings a little bit of magic with him when he shows up at Wildwood. This past summer, he joined our co-hosts Eric Kotila and Mike Lee along with team videographer Anne Marie for an interview and intimate performance in the podcast RV.

Tune in to the find out what Willy Tea has cooking in the coming months, and listen to a few special performances, including a new song called “The Nurse” (see video below).

Heading to next weekend’s Wildwood MusicFest & Campout in Sheridan, OR, U.S.A.? Our podcast team will be there in full force and ready to party.

To help you (and us) get ready, we’ve put together this modest playlist of songs by some of the artists who will grace the big stage at Roshambo Art Farm during the event, which kicks off Friday, July 19 and runs through mid-afternoon on Sunday, July 21. (Get your tickets here.)

We’re excited that many of our close friends and podcast veterans are on this year’s bill, including Drunken Prayer, Mike Coykendall, Anita Lee Elliott and Silver Lake 66. We’re also super stoked to see J. Moses & The Ragged Sunday make their Wildwood debut — featuring the sweet vocal stylings of Jason Morgan, the Ragged Sunday is one of the hottest new bands on our local roots scene in Portland. Be sure to get up front early Friday and prepare to rock out with Jason and the lads.

We’re also looking forward to catching up with a few of our longtime friends, including the great Willy Tea Taylor and our old pal Matt Woods, who will have copies of his fabulous new album and will perform with his full band, the Natural Disasters. Matt is a one-man storm of talent, so seeing him with a full band will truly be a sight (and sound) to behold.

And of course, we’re really excited to be turned on to lots of new talent. From the world class music of Jerry Joseph, Sallie Ford and Sammy Brue to some of the exciting acts such as the True Loves and Tennessee Stiffs who are just coming on our radar, the lineup at Wildwood is once again sure to set our musical hearts floating happily into the night.

TMFW Podcast Special: Catching up with Morgan Geer of Drunken Prayer

Asheville, N.C.’s Morgan Geer is back with what critics are calling maybe his finest work yet with Drunken Prayer: “Cordelia Elsewhere” is set for release Friday, April 5.

A couple years back — around the time he was about to embark on tour as lead guitarist for alt-country icons Freakwater — Morgan Geer debuted an original song that’s been haunting us here at That Much Further West Podcast ever since.

“Cordelia” has a melody and chorus so catchy it’ll stick in your head like a piece of gum might to your shoe. But it was the fact that Geer — the man behind one of our favorite bands, Drunken Prayer — had recently moved from Portland to the greener pastures of Asheville, N.C. that really made the song hit home.

It’s all come full circle since. Geer recently visited Portland and played a series of shows ahead of the release of his brand-new record with Drunken Prayer, titled Cordelia Elsewhere, due out this Friday on Deer Lodge Records. We caught up with Morgan to talk about the nice response the new record is receiving and our continuing fascination with the title cut.

“Cordelia” is a song about the “scooping out of the middle class,” as Geer puts it, a state of affairs that has become all too common in trendy towns where gentrification is driving up prices on everything from rent to food to real estate.

Geer also talks about how the current state of American politics creeped in as an overarching theme for the new record. He speaks to how divided the nation has become, and about how so many Americans are trapped in costly living situations they can’t get out of.

As for the record, American Standard Time put it this way: “Beware Cordelia Elsewhere. Here Drunken Prayer is exploring pathos with a variety of American sounds. Whistling past the graveyard with garage rock, country, soul, and a power pop vibe that buoys listeners in its murk. Here is the best thing Drunken Prayer has ever done. Emotional work songs for dark days. Songs to sing along to as you dig your own grave.”

In our interview, Geer also shares his plans for the rest of the year, which include a summer trip back to the west coast for a series of shows, including an appearance at this year’s Wildwood MusicFest & Campout in July.

The Resolectrics —Portland’s singular roots rock and soul power trio — are ready to release their long-awaited sophomore album, Open Seas, due to hit record store shelves and internet streaming on Sept. 21. But they’re making the album available in CD form at select shows as the summer winds down.

The lads were kind enough to share the album’s opening track, “Elevator Blues,” as an exclusive stream for listeners of That Much Further West Podcast in conjunction with Vortex Music Magazine. With Bob Dunham’s bouncy bass line and a radio-ready vibe, “Elevator Blues” is a solid introduction to The Resolectrics’ ever-evolving sound, where twin vocals and hot guitar licks blend seamlessly with a deep, commanding groove.

The song also makes a clear connection to the Memphis-style soul sound that marked the band’s debut record, High Water. Featuring the vocals of guitarist Tate Peterson and drummer John Becher, it’s a rowdy rave-up that gets down and dirty with the help of guest David Lipkind on harmonica.

But folks should expect a few more twists and turns on Open Seas, as the band adds a dose of melodic, classic rock, pop and psychedelia to the mix.

Having built a solid following around the Northwest thanks in part to a heavy schedule of regular gigging from Central Oregon to the Oregon Coast and up into Washington, The Resolectrics appear poised to make a case as the party band of choice as the college rock radio season kicks in this fall.

The band will celebrate the arrival of Open Seas at a record-release party on Oct. 13 at Secret Society in Portland.

Welcome back for our second installment of podcast picks, aimed at getting your ears ready for the 2018 Wildwood MusicFest & Campout, set for July 20-22 at Roshambo Art Farm in the beautiful Willamina/Sheridan area of Oregon.

With the festival just days away, we thought we’d kick off this session with The Resolectrics, Portland’s powerhouse R&B-tinged rock trio with a set scheduled for Saturday afternoon at the festival. This will be the band’s second performance at Wildwood, and this year’s set comes with the promise of a new album due in the fall.

Knowing the rollicking fun this band inspires, they’re an easy “must see” pick for our podcast team. Based in the classic rock and soul of the 60s and 70s, The Resolectrics take it to new heights by mixing in some psychedelic guitar and killer harmonies for a sound that’s all their own.

And they’re just one reason why this year’s festival is a can’t-miss for lovers of music from all over the spectrum. Check out the live performance of “Easier To Go” from the group Five Letter Word (video below), the classic country of “Weight of The World” by Western Centuries, and the wonderful, exploring horns on “Aynotche Terebu” by Tezeta Band. High quality stuff in a variety of styles — that’s what Wildwood is all about.

It’s our favorite time of the year, when the summer season of music festivals hits its peak, and the gang from That Much Further West Podcast couldn’t be more stoked to be attending the 7th Annual Wildwood MusicFest & Campout, July 20-22 at Roshambo Art Farm in beautiful Sheridan, Oregon, USA.

The podcast team has been onsite every year, and our show hosts Mike Lee and Eric Kotila have served as festival Masters of Ceremonies from the start. We’re thrilled to be invited back by the two wonderful local businesswomen who make the festival happen, Katie Kendall and Kim Hamblin.

Sarah Shook and her band, The Disarmers, will rock your world at the 7th Annual Wildwood MusicFest & Campout.

Lovers of music and their local Willamina/Sheridan community, these two women — with the help of a fabulous team of volunteers — have captained a completely home grown festival with absolutely zero corporate sponsorship. Katie and Kim have put together some stellar line-ups over the years and kept that family-friendly atmosphere alive and well.

They also work hard to showcase local businesses as vendors and give back to the community. The festival has grown over the years but the founders seek to keep it from growing too big. A big shout out to Kim, Katie, their families, Dina Sayers and her team at Great Northwest Productions, and the scores of volunteers who make things run smoothly.

In the run up to this year’s festival, That Much Further West Podcast has put together a batch of preview playlists to give y’all a primer for the music to be featured at the 7th Annual Wildwood MusicFest $ Campout.
